Douglas K Smith MD, Founder and Owner of MSKIC, has been actively involved in medical care since age 15 where he served as an orderly in a terminal cancer ward. Dr. Smith worked as an EMT in the trauma ER of a major University during high school and later in his career served as an emergency room physician.
Dr. Smith graduated from Wake Forest University Medical School. He pursued Orthopedic residency training at the Mayo Clinic In Rochester, MN. He obtained grant funding to study orthopedic MRI in the pioneering days of MRI in 1984 during his orthopedic residency at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Smith’s growing research interests in MRI and hand and wrist imaging lead him to pursue radiology residency training at the Mallinckrodt Institute at Washington University in St. Louis. He continued his research and publishing and served as Chief Resident in Radiology at Washington University.
Dr. Smith served at Wilford Hall USAF Med Center in San Antonio during Desert Storm. He taught residents and fellows in Orthopedics and Radiology and continued research in orthopedic MRI and published several seminal articles regarding normal anatomy and findings in cadavers.
Dr. Smith has lectured extensively around the world and was inducted into the prestigious International Skeletal Society. He participated in the military roll-out of military teleradiology and read the first x-ray beamed from Guantanamo Bay.
After leaving the Air Force, Dr. Smith pursued private practice as an Interventional Spine Radiologist and became nationally recognized for perfecting the technique of percutaneous vertebroplasty and pain management procedures.
Dr. Smith’s clients have included the team doctors for professional sports teams, including the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys. He is the official US Ski and Snowboarding Team Physician.
Dr. Smith founded Musculoskeletal Imaging Consultants in 1995 and has focused on orthopedic teleradiology. He is licensed in 35 states and provides orthopedic MRI teleradiology services throughout the US.
